Lieutenant Mányay Imre is in love with the colonel's daughter Corinna. Feelings are reciprocal. The officer is commissioned to foil a plot by a Russian spy organization, sending him on what is thought to be sick-leave. He works as a gardener under the name of Patenko on the estate of count Toprini. To Imre's surprise, he is helped by the count's wife. Her marriage with the count is unhappy. The woman even goes to the colonel's place to warn him of the dangers attending on Mányay. The lieutenant is arrested, but he can finally escape. The count commits suicide.
