The New Emperor and Empress

The royal couple's backgrounds, courtship, and map for the future... May 1, 2019 marked the date of ascension for Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. Through NHK archive footage and interviews with former aides and classmates, we look back on their lives to get a feel for the kind of Emperor and Empress they will become. Born destined for the throne, Naruhito together with his father studied into the history of the Imperial family; he gained lifelong friends and resolve during his years at Oxford University. Masako, a former diplomat, is of the generation that first experienced the equal employment act in Japan.
