Sānsūr

The repressive Iranian regime has a long history of human rights violations. Censorship and persecution, in extreme cases ending in death, have been particularly hard on local women. Six of them dared to speak out in this documentary directed by Mostafa Heravi. A visual artist, a teacher, a journalist, a cricketer, a musician, and a well-known film actress recapitulate their arduous yet hopeful life stories. Some have remained in the country, while others have fled into exile. None of them are willing to accept rules that tell women how they should behave, dress, or speak. They pass an ornamental mask among themselves, which is a reminder of home, a memento of oppression, and an object whose rejection expresses a shared desire for freedom. (One World)
