When his mother dies, Ali is hit with a profound sense of nostalgia that forms a growing wedge between him and his family life. His wife, Gabrielle, feels his pain, but she is powerless to help him. Then, quite suddenly, Ali decides to leave Montreal and his family behind in the hopes of unearthing his roots in Arwad, an island located off the Syrian coast. He is accompanied by Marie, his mistress, who is visiting the island for the first time. However, when the unexpected occurs, a meeting between Gabrielle and Marie becomes inevitable.
