The documentary feature film depicts the tragedy of the Germans along the Volga river. Stalin exiled this ethnic group to different far-off parts of the Soviet Union. The resolution was overruled in 1989. The heroine of the film is a 75 year-old peasant woman, Mathilde Bock, who spent several years in a labour camp, then she was allowed to settle down on the Kazakh steppes with the remaining members of her family. She is longing back to the Volga country and she also wants to find her son lost on the way. She sets off with Maria, but they cannot learn anything positive. Her grandchild emigrates to Germany with the entire family. Mathilde dies, her relations, however, move back to the homeland, where they are received with hostility. Reconciliation is still far away.
