This chronicle of conquest reconstructs the Spanish invasion of the American Southwest in the first half of the 16th century as it explores contexts, motivations, myths and historical events. With a critical eye and a distinct dose of irony, the film builds an epic saga about conquering and ruling a land, combined with a criticism of contemporary plans for using the region as a nuclear waste site.
The film emphasizes the relationship between history and the present in various forms – when high-rises loom over a meadow that acts as a stage for a historical reconstruction or when tourists are asked about Coronado.
