A boy with no name awakens with a hole through his chest, a strange marking on his belly, and no memories. The one link to his past is a locket containing a picture of a girl whose name he does not know. Within moments he meets Popo, who unlike the memoryless boy has a purpose. Through Popo, the boy learns that where he is a body without memory, in this world there are many who are only memories with no body. The rich harvest the choice bodies, leaving only the dregs for those down below. And yet even though he has no memories, there are many who seem to want his life. Other reviewers on FilmBooster have mentioned the way the visuals are off-putting. However, I, for one, would give the anime's creators credit for the contrast between what this show looks like and what it is about, which seemed unreal to me. So I spent most of the time staring with my eyes popping out, trying to understand how something this crazy could have such a deep, dark, sometimes even depressing narrative and how the combination could work together so well. Plus, the moment I got over the initial surprise and started to pick up on what I was watching, I also found myself perfectly caught up in the unique atmosphere. I enjoyed it until the very last episode. I think this show is exceedingly unique in showing a crazy setting combined with the brilliant idea of Kaiba's universe and that you can transfer someone's mind and memories to someone else's body. This show is not afraid to show the twisted and unhinged sides of things. So this anime series has earned my full appreciation.
