En vildfågel

A young mate intervenes in a fight between the first mate and the boatswain-an incident that results in the young mate's being put under arrest. The boatswain helps him escape, and he takes refuge in the cottage of an old woman. The old woman is acquainted with the Brenners, a well-to-do, happy family consisting of husband, wife, and young daughter. Mrs Brenner has a dark secret: in her youth, she was engaged to a young scientist, who died in an accident and left his young fiancée alone and expecting his son.
