Algeria, in the 1930s. Younes is nine years old when he is placed in the care of his uncle, a pharmacist in the city of Oran. Renamed Jonas, he has a happy childhood as he grows up with the other young people in Rio Salado, who become his friends. Emilie is one of the gang; everyone is in love with her.
