Pod koniec XIII wieku Szkocja dostaje się pod panowanie angielskiego króla, Edwarda I. Przejęcie władzy odbywa się w wyjątkowo krwawych okolicznościach. Jednym ze świadków gwałtów i morderstw jest kilkunastoletni chłopak, William Wallace. Po latach spędzonych pod opieką wuja dorosły William wraca do rodzinnej wioski. Jedną z pierwszych osób, które spotyka jest Murron, przyjaciółka z lat dzieciństwa. Dawne uczucie przeradza się w wielką i szczerą miłość. Niestety wkrótce dziewczyna ginie z rąk angielskich żołnierzy. Wydarzenie to staje się momentem przełomowym w życiu młodego Szkota. William decyduje się bowiem na straceńczą walkę z okupantem i po brawurowym ataku zdobywa warownię wroga. Dzięki ogromnej odwadze zostaje wykreowany na przywódcę powstania przeciw angielskiej tyranii. (Art-House)

Gibson already proved he can do it in his directorial debut, but this time he may have surprised himself. The choreography of the battle scenes is flawless and they are very naturalistic, with blood splashing everywhere, they draw the viewer into the vortex of the fight. Gibson is surefooted also in the intimate scenes and I'd say those Oscars are well deserved.

A war film the way it should be – pathetic, cheesy, historically untrustworthy. I mean, perfect. Mel Gibson in the role of Scottish insurgent William Wallace confirms that he does the great heroes well, the battle sequences are appropriately juicy and blood-soaked, the love-story appropriately tearful and the end as heroic as it should be. I just really like Braveheart, although I always laugh a little at Mr. Wallace's "philosophical" outbursts about freedom. It's a house of cards, but it's well built!

There's nothing to fault in this masterpiece. Mel Gibson handled the role of director and main character perfectly. A few heroic scenes and a few brave words, underlined by James Horner's fantastic score, are all it takes to make a perfect historical drama. Freedooooooom!

One of my favorite films ever. An amazing Mel Gibson (both behind and in front of the camera), the best battles, authentic medieval atmosphere, perfect music and the wonderful Catherine McCormack.

I thought that when I see this movie for the umpteenth time, it will no longer have the same impact on me, but even this time it made the same impression on me. Mel Gibson directed the film brilliantly, but I still think he also played the character brilliantly. The way he sometimes acts with his face is unbelievable to me. For me, it's still 100%.
