They are the queens of the skies. Within minutes they reach heights of more than 30,000 feet. Soaring high above the clouds, travelling from place to place, these gigantic birds of shining steel cross seas, mountains and deserts, carrying millions of people around the globe. Travelling the world in a minimum of time is a vital part of modern and mobile life in the 21st century. About 80 years ago, nobody would ever have imagined doing so. But two ingenious tinkerers, the German Hans Papst von Ohain and the English Air Force pilot Frank Whittle, contrived to start a revolution in aeronautics. Unknowingly, the two started a race for the first jet engine of the world. Years later, their inventions would make the earth a smaller planet. But only one of them would win the race for glory.
