Death crept all over fourteenth century Europe. The whole continent was shaken to its foundations because of a disease which killed, almost without exception. People called it the Black Death, though today it has entered our consciousness under the name of the plague. The evolutionary biologist Henrik Poinar, with the help of his international team of specialists, reveals step by step the story of a puzzle which is over six hundred years old. The genome reconstruction of the bacteria that caused the Black Death and other information helps the scientists to investigate this insidious disease and to track its potential mutations. This is of cardinal importance, as it contributes to the protection of humankind in case of another plague pandemic similar to the one that decimated the population of Europe a few hundred years ago. In fact, one can get infected with the plague even today. It is not unique that the plague is transmitted from animal to man. A clear example is the story of a man who caught the plague from his cat. Despite fi rst class medical care he almost died. There is no doubt that the plague is more than a mere chapter in our history and that on a certain scale it is still present on Earth today.
