The film takes us to a country farm on the Austrian-Czech border in 1956-57. Two young people about to escape from the country ask for shelter at the secluded farm. By next morning, one of them disappears and the other is found with his skull crashed in the stall. Sokorai orders his son to throw the corpse into the Danube. They all keep entirely silent about the incident, living their usual, hard life, yet their anguish is unbearable. When the police finally find the murderer and the old man, breathing a sigh of relief, admits to having thrown the corpse into the Danube, the sensitive Imre, who originally wanted to study and a better life, disappears.
