The first response, too, is borne in the spirit of a contemplation of nature, set to the sounds of the sea or a lion's roar. Gradually, however, we move from anonymous phenomena to human beings. As the setting sun is lost in the sea, we slowly – through rhythmic images and music – find ourselves in New York. Private life becomes public and loses its personal dimension. The images bring us closer to the film, all of it mediating the time in which the letters were shot. The director travels between New York and Berlin, which is reflected in her correspondence.
