1787 – France is already seething with inevitable revolution. The Age of Enlightement ignites. The nobility have other concerns. Jean-François de la Plaine is banished from the kingdom for having killed the King's friend. Leaving his beloved Louise in France, he is exiled to the African coast where he is to govern a tiny colony – a trading post on the banks of a capricious river. Within this exotic culture, sensuality, violence and love have different fragrances. Here, in the heart of trade, slavery and tribal wars, he is confronted with himslef in a way never before experienced.
