Przed laty hip-hop zrewolucjonizował życie młodzieży na całym świecie. Również dziś, w czasach post hip-hopowych, ma ogromny wpływ na życie nastolatków. Malcolm Adekanb i jest typowym geekiem, obsesyjnie zakochanym w kulturze hip-hopu lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Z trudem próbuje przetrwać w trudnym sąsiedztwie w Inglewood, gdzie przemoc, narkotyki i dealerzy są codziennością. Jego największym marzeniem są studia na Harvardzie. Nieoczekiwanie na jego drodze staje Dom, uliczny dealer narkotyków, jak wkrótce się okaże, równie mocno zanurzony w kulturze hip-hopu. To spotkanie zmienia życie Malcolma. Chłopak dokonuje pierwszych złych wyborów, przechodząc wyboistą ścieżkę - od bycia geekiem przez narkotyki, by w końcu stać się sobą. (UIP)

A very intelligent, entertaining and refreshingly new take on coming-of-age film. I never dreamed that a film about Hip Hop, black people and drugs would grow on me. Dope may not crackle with humor, but it garners marks for its other attributes. Likeable geek main characters, catchy soundtrack, brisk pace, working tension, decent twists, beautiful colorful visuals and a great twist with a message at the end. Very good though authentically gritty. I have not cheered for anyone so much in a long time! PS: an incredible supply of slang! 80%!

This is a film that is a very pleasant surprise in several ways. First and foremost, it's the young actors who show that they are incredibly capable and that they carry the whole film just fine on their own. The second aspect is the characters that appear here, and subsequently, the screenplay, which has something of Pulp Fiction in it, but it's different, modern, and aimed at the youth.
