In a post-apocalyptic future, humanity has been devastated by a mutated fungal disease that has turned most of the Earth's population into ravenous zombies, known as 'hungries'. In a secure army base in Birmingham, a group of scientists experiment on part-human, part-hungry, hybrid children in the hope of finding a possible cure to the epidemic. In this fortified facility, teacher Helen Justineau (Gemma Arterton) believes ten-year-old Melanie (Sennia Nanua) may hold the answers to a future cure but objects to her superior, Dr. Caroline Caldwell (Glenn Close)'s plan to kill her for further experimentation. When the survivors find their base under attack from hungries they are forced to flee to England's destroyed capital where they continue their fight for survival and for a better future. Zombie nonsense in a typically British style. In some of the action sequences, of which there are very few, you feel like you're watching a sequel to Zack Snyder's 2004 hit, but you soon sober up. The pace slows down, the running time drags and the plot doesn't know where to go. One stupidity follows another, but as that bold attempt at a novel contribution to the subgenre, for a few bucks, why not.

Solid zombie flick, but, considering the good foreign reviews and the above-average rating for a horror film in IMDB, I was expecting more. And compared to the new wave of great zombie classics like Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, or Boyle’s 28 Days Later, this new film is streets behind. The premise is solid, it brings a couple of nice and interesting things to the sub-genre, but the execution doesn’t deliver anything new. It’s so bland in terms of direction and creativity, that it gave me the impression of a slightly bigger TV production. While I was writing this, I had a look at the résumé of Colm McCarthy, the director, and I see that my impression was correct.

The Girl with All the Gifts doesn't have an outright action-packed pace, but since it's a zombie film, action is certainly present. Much more interesting are the slow scenes, like the one among the walkers, which is truly well-done, although ultimately unnecessarily hysterical. A very well-acted film that also stands out for its originality. In the zombie genre, it's simply a fantastic combination that's worth it.
