Dušan Hanák's feature debut is one of the key titles of the Czechoslovak New Wave shot in the late 1960s. The main character of the minimalistic, documentary-like story with experimental elements is a cook called Lauko (Václav Lohniský) who is confronted with the imminence of death: he has been diagnosed with throat cancer. In Hanák's metaphoric film language it is the whole society that suffers from the "impossibility to speak". (Summer Film School)
