The Mexican directing duo maps a Spanish expedition to Popocatépetl – the second highest mountain in Mexico. The year is 1519 and the knight, Diego de Ordaz, accepts the absurd challenge and, accompanied just by two soldiers, travels through the unblemished landscape to the volcano and the world of myths and superstitions. Resembling Herzog's Aguirre, Wrath of God, the contemplative epic depicts a mythical journey which turns into an obsession for the Spanish Conquistadors in the New World. The harsh battle of body and mind is emphasised by the desolate tones of the musical score, which, along with the noises of the resisting volcano, provide practically the only company of the silent expedition and their fear of the unknown.
