Season 1 (2016) (S01)

angielski So, is this a Japanese attempt at comic book superheroes, with a narrative concerning a young boy and the essence of heroism, as he has no powers and virtually no chance of becoming a superhero in a world where everyone has powers? The show is very predictable, the way it is heading is also quite obvious because they just gave it away at the end of the second episode. On the other hand, it is quite entertaining and also gets pretty emotional. I really enjoyed both the sad and happy experiences of the main male protagonist (although I understand anyone who says it sucks because the main male protagonist just cried his way through the entire first half of the season). The style of the animation is a bit "retro", and I like it. It is basically a classic shonen anime series, centered around fight scenes, which are really especially good in the second half of the season. I have basically now got a good idea of what superhero comics would have looked like if they had been made by a Japanese dude, and that does not seem like such a terrible thing. Sure, you cannot compare it to the Marvel or DC universes, however, I personally enjoyed this show, because it has that sense of playfulness the Japanese are good at, is suitably over-the-top and the emotional side is handled in a good way... Perhaps this show is "designed for five-year-old Japanese kids", although after thinking about it for a long time (since JackStrange advised me to do that), I finally realized that I just cannot escape that pleasant feeling I get from watching it. I am going to go even further and even declare that I probably enjoyed this show the most out of all the spring 2016 releases. What does that say about me? I guess it mostly says that I can enjoy the simplicity of this show as, despite the fact I am a thirty-something adult man, I am really just a big kid at heart... On the other hand, I feel fine and happy with myself (I have a job, no debts, and I do what I want) and I had that same fine feeling and contentment from watching "My Hero Academia". 8.3/10. ()

Season 2 (2017) (S02)

angielski Tournaments, practices, and final exams are practically nothing new in any student's life and special academy for heroes is no exception. Still, even these fairly typical episodes were pretty decent and each had at least one epic moment that reminded me why I love watching this anime series so much. It still gives me that lovely feeling and makes me realize why I enjoy heroic narratives so much and why people like comic books so much, for example. Plus, things are getting much more dramatic at a rapid pace as the dark side is also gaining momentum. Most importantly, though, we have been introduced to this show's main vilain. Personally speaking, I am satisfied and want to praise what I think is a very well-produced second season. Compared to the first season, the  second season has lost none of its pace or atmosphere. It still has the same good, likable characters, plus the interesting animation and appropriately chosen soundtrack. 8.4/10. ()

Season 3 (2018) (S03)

angielski This is definitely the best season of this anime series so far. Again it features some great scenes, featuring two epic fights - "All for One" vs. "One for All" (it makes you wonder what else someone could accomplish using the basic story of Dumas' The Three Musketeers...) and Midoriya vs. Bakugo. This time it is extremely emotionally charged and suspenseful - it is really more interesting than the first two seasons. There are a few answers and a lot of new questions, and it even manages to act as a promotion for the upcoming movie (OK this is not that cool...). Another reviewer Toren wrote that this show is "the best that modern shonen has to offer" and I agree - both the narrative and the atmosphere are definitely very good. In addition, as the fight scenes pack a punch, the characters are still quite relatable (the main protagonist especially gets more bearable from one season to the next), I have to pull the highest rating out of my hat this time. It was extremely entertaining, so 8.8/10. P.S. I would recommend that "Nyanta" look to cleanse her soul by watching the anime series Black Clover because it would help her to realize that Deku is definitely not the worst main male protagonist out there. o.0 ()

Season 4 (2019) (S04)

angielski Again (as with the last season of Haikyuu!!) I was very skeptical about this season. If you are making a shonen anime series, or perhaps any sort of super-hero show, then for the sake of building atmosphere I think it is pointless to put the most epic battle between the strongest good guy and the most powerful villain (in this show it is All Might vs. All for One) anywhere other than the very end. It would have been weird if, for example, Superman had defeated Zod halfway through the movie and then had just simply carried on to deal with some minor villains for the rest of it. It would certainly seem weird in a Superman movie or TV show, however, this is not about just one amazing superhero, it is about his successors, so if you had, say, a TV show about Robin (from Batman), then this connection between two generations, where there is an epic scene about one having to leave to make way for the next makes perfect sense (you do not have to look that far for that, because there is a similar storyline Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). After such a spectacular epic showdown, which brings about the end of an era, there must inevitably be a comedown. After seeing one of the highlights of the anime series, it is going to take a lot of time and be difficult to build up to another such highlight. All of this was on my mind before this new season even started... Then I saw the first few episodes and also a YouTube video with a certain very popular anime critic explaining why, logically, this season is already the worst season ever. He presented some interesting arguments which made a lot of sense, one of which was the one I mentioned above. He also criticized the complete change of environment in the first half of the season which means that a ton of characters (the main male protagonist’s friends in Class 1-A for example) are an afterthought and have yet to do much of anything (i.e. they will be missed by a lot of the show’s aficionados), and there are large amounts of pointless character introductions, so the show basically just feels hastily overstuffed, and they do not work as well as the old friends we have already established a relationship with. He also criticized the whole point of the season’s narrative. Basically, Eri’s character is unrelatable, so the narrative is not going to make sense to a lot of people because it starts and ends with her status as a plot device. She has no backstory, not much of anything really, yet expects you to care and buy into the other characters’ insane sacrifices in saving her, and justifies all the drama and the epic battles just because she is a little girl who is suffering. He had other arguments, which I cannot remember now, although I was really intrigued by them at the time, so I was really watching this season closely to see if his points were valid... Well, I did not find it that way at all. On the contrary! The change of the narrative arc was actually quite refreshing in the end. The new characters were intriguing, and Mirio, who looks like Tintin on steroids was in some of the best scenes of the whole season and I am even convinced he might have been a better "successor" than Midoriya (Deku) in some ways. I was equally taken by the whole Eri narrative, which is no surprise because as a fan of cute little animated girls, any injustice done to them instantly pushes my buttons (along with other internet nerds from our little "Must protecc!" club). Moreover, the fight of Midoriya vs. Overhaul was great and the real highlight of the whole arc and clearly demonstrated that even after the awesome carnage from the last season there was still something to look forward to. So in the end, I am pleased beyond expectations with the entire Shie Hassaikai Arc. I had a great time watching it and ran the gamut of emotions once again. Then came the second part of the season and the U.A. School Festival arc. These parts of the anime series usually bore me to death, so once again I was slightly on edge as to how My Hero Academia would handle it. It was back to school in a friendly, relaxed way, seeing old friends and making new ones. Most importantly, it had Gentle Criminal, probably the most likeable villain (so far), of the entire anime series, who, along with La Brava, was a really good character and I was secretly hoping they would succeed. However, rooting for the bad guy in super-hero TV shows or movies usually means big trouble, it shows that the main male protagonist does not have enough charisma... Perhaps Gentle Criminal was just so awesome and La Brava was too lovable - and liking the Joker and Harley Quinn does not necessarily mean that Batman sucks, right? The showdown between Midoriya and Gentle Criminal was truly spectacular, a duel between characters with such similar yet incredibly strong motivations intrigued me, and the added backstory made me sympathize with Gentle Criminal and his companion (and also root for them) all the more. I could say that the outcome of this battle was rather not really what I wanted, however, on the other hand, Eri's smile made up for it... The finále and the rise of the new number one hero only needed two episodes for the anime’s creators to set the mood, and stage another brilliant battle, and change your perspective on a character you probably might not have even considered just a few months ago... In conclusion, this season of My Hero Academia did not disappoint me either, on the contrary - it easily eliminated any doubts that I might stop enjoying it in the future because the producers know how to create a good atmosphere, what fanboys want (even if it is just a bunch of clichés sometimes), and how to make quality and dynamic battles... I enjoyed it, I enjoyed it a lot. 8.7/10. () (mniej) (więcej)

Season 5 (2021) (S05)

angielski This season has been rather disappointing, at least in the beginning. I am not inetersted about Class B of UA, and in all honesty, I didn't even remember most their members from the previous seasons. I mean, it makes complete sense, I can remember the names of most of my own classmates from my school days, even though I can only remember one or two names at most from the schoolmates in the other classes. So, anyway, I somehow cannot understand why I should be invested in the members of the other grades, as I did not spend enough time with them to really get to know them much and the only reason I can remember them is because of their sometimes embarrassing supposed rivalry with the Class A. I therefore could not really care about their competition and the whole first half of the season felt like an incredibly long-winded training arc so everyone, including the main male protagonist, could acquire some new skills. Like, good, I get it, even though YAWN... It then just goes from one training arc to another. This time the practices were shorter and more boring than in the previous season (practically nothing much happened...) and the whole thing centered around the Todoroki family way too much for my taste, as I just did not find it as interesting as the anime series tried to make it out to be. A peculiar thing caught my attention, and that was the talk of another mysterious sibling, and I got the impression the show will introduce this new character sometime in the future because otherwise the anime’s creators would not have mentioned his existence at all and according to the rules of making TV shows - I have not yet seen a dead body... The ending was, as always, very good. This whole season was once again about worldbuilding, however, the demonstration of how the disparate group of mediocre League of Villains became the most powerful criminal organization capable of destroying the world around them, was excellent and, most importantly, necessary. All for One gave me a feeling of respect and fear, however, I never found Shigaraki and his League of Villains very frightening, and I was just not very impressed by them. That has of course now changed, the evil is now more powerful than ever, and I am anxiously awaiting doomsday. So even though this season is more like the calm before the storm, which lovers of shows that are more action-packed are not going to love, it has given me an overall impression of like 7/10 (and that is mainly due to the finále), I am anxiously looking forward to the next season, because, in my opinion, the atmosphere around the epic confrontation between good and evil they managed to build up during this season was very good… ()

Season 6 (2022) (S06)

angielski What Avengers: Infinity War is to the MCU, My Hero Academia – Season 6 is to MHA. It’s an epic battle of good versus evil. All the elaborate worldbuilding from the previous seasons has paid off. No character is left out in this massive conflict. It's the first "Avengers Assemble" moment where we see all the major characters from the two generations in action, fighting a threat beyond anything that’s ever happened within the universe. Some villains are fleshed out so well that it makes you sympathize with them or at least understand them a little. Just like in Infinity War, it's just an introduction to the Endgame, which starts with The Dark Knight in this season. Season 6 is what fans have been waiting for. If you're still not convinced of its qualities, then it's probably time to admit that it's just not for you... It’s the best of MHA so far, and it’s also the answer to my fears about where things would go after the slightly unconvincing previous season. It’s a promise of even crazier things to come, a demonstration that MHA can be a really cool shounen, with deeper themes and a darker atmosphere. I want to leave some room in case the Endgame is even better than Infinity War (which I can’t say about the MCU – I like IW better) but considering how many emotions it made me feel and how much I enjoyed it all, I cannot go below 9/10.
