Joannie Eberhart (Nicole Kidman) wydaje się, że jest w siódmym niebie. Jest najmłodszą panią prezes w historii stacji telewizyjnej EBS, ma też troskliwego męża i dwójkę udanych dzieci. Na pozór życie Joanny wydaje się, hmm, idealne... aż do pewnego katastrofalnego dnia, gdy całe jej życie legło w gruzach. Traci pracę, ma problemy małżeńskie, nie pamięta nawet, do jakiej szkoły chodzą jej dzieci. Zaczyna przypominać idealną kandydatkę do terapii elektrowstrząsami. Tak, dopiero załamanie nerwowe skłania Joannę i jej męża Waltera do zastanowienia się, co w ich życiu jest naprawdę ważne. Całą rodziną udają się do idyllicznego, rajskiego przedmieścia Stepford w stanie Connecticut. Ale w uroczym małym miasteczku Stepford dzieje się coś dziwnego, co wzbudza podejrzenia Joanny. Podejrzliwa jest także Bobbie Markowitz (Bette Midler), która niedawno przeprowadziła się do miasteczka wraz ze swym wybuchowym mężem Dave'm (Jon Lovitz). Także Roger Bannister (Roger Bart), architekt, który przybył do Stepford mając nadzieję na uratowanie swego chwiejnego związku z konserwatywnym partnerem Jerry'm (David Marshall Grant) zastanawia się, co jest grane. This was such a shitty movie that did not impress me at all. Maybe there was just a slightly above average Nicole Kidman, however, that is really, really not enough to be awarding the movie more than one star.

The weakest Frank Oz film I've seen so far... I was especially astonished at how he didn't even try to build a mysterious atmosphere, and almost everything that others would hide for the end, he actually disclosed from the beginning. The ending was completely moronic, but even so it seems to me that it wasn't bad, but simply just an average black comedy that was supposed to be better.

I haven't read the book or seen the original 1970s film version, so I don't have to deal with the eternal problem of how the screenwriter and director have allegedly desecrated the sacred source material. Departing from the original genre to make a sci-fi comedy seems like a very sensible idea, as such a subject can't be taken seriously today. I openly admit that I enjoyed this more than most contemporary comedies, though that doesn't necessarily mean the film is full of original, sparkling humor. It's more a reflection of my positive relationship with sci-fi, as one tends to poke fun at what they love. Frank Oz's direction is decent within his capabilities, with the weaknesses lying more in the script. The casting is good, and in the case of Nicole Kidman, a perfect hit. Overall impression: 55%.

The atmosphere is lackluster, the technical execution is very inconsistent, and the film as a whole simply feels weird. The problem is that it presents the topic with such a dose of stupidity and directorial incompetence, and the actors overact in such a crazy way that it's horrifying.
