Kahina Zadi (Leila Bekhti), a French police officer, travels to Kiruna, a small mining community in remote northern Sweden, to investigate a brutal murder of a French citizen. With the help of Anders Harnesk (Gustaf Hammarsten), a Swedish DNA and a member of the Sami, an ancient, mysterious indigenous tribe of Scandinavia, they are faced with new killings and the initial murder turns out to be the tip of the iceberg. Kahina and Anders come to realise that behind the killings is a ten-year-old secret conspiracy involving many of the town’s inhabitants. Kahina finds herself confronting a ruthless serial killer, always one step ahead, a macabre plan, and her own painful past. (StudioCanal UK)

Midnattssol (2016) 

angielski Before the first episode, I was sure my final rating would be high, as is usually the case with Scandinavian crime series. I was in for quite a surprise (an unpleasant one). I don't want to blame it all on the French, but I really think they had a major share in that. It took me a while to realize that the main focus was not on the investigation, but the coexistence of various different cultures (preferably all of them) in Europe. The creators were constantly trying to evoke an incredibly mysterious atmosphere and the result was that it had no atmosphere at all. I was quite annoyed by the constant flashbacks to Kahina's past and the endless supply of surprising results of the investigation. No, this series didn't work for me, and I do have The Bridge in my top ten favorites. ()

Episode 1 (2016) (E01) 

angielski The first episode of the series surprised me strongly, I really like Nordic matters, so I rarely rate anything less than four stars, but here I'm not sure... The excellent atmosphere, which always captivates me in Nordic crime series, was missing here. I have a strong suspicion that it may be due to the French co-production. Even Peter Stormare didn't convince me, and I really like him. We'll see how it goes from here. ()

Episode 2 (2016) (E02) 

angielski Unfortunately, the improvement did not come. The number of corpses is increasing, but the investigation is unbelievably stupid. If I didn't know that the story takes place in Sweden, I would think it's some banana republic. The main heroine goes through some internal conflict, but it leaves me completely cold. If the creators wanted to give depth to her character in this way, it did not work for me. ()

Episode 3 (2016) (E03) 

angielski In the third episode, I gave it a star because it finally explained to me why I don't like this Nordic crime show. It's actually a French-Swedish variation on the themes of tolerance, truth-seekers, and global symbiosis. The relationships between Swedes and Sami still interested me, but I was annoyed by the necessary homosexual subplot, and the Thai cat convinced me that the scriptwriter took some mushrooms. The conclusion of the episode was perhaps just a very bad joke. ()

Episode 4 (2016) (E04) 

angielski I still have the feeling that it's a parody of a crime story. With every additional idea from the screenwriters, the situation worsens. The creators constantly try to bring an atmosphere of mystery to every scene, but the result just seems silly. And when they don't know what else to do, they add a government conspiracy to spice things up. Hmmm, this is how Grandma used to cook. By the way, her son would probably make a better investigator than his mother, he tracked her down nicely from Paris. ()

Episode 5 (2016) (E05) 

angielski I had to add one star because I laughed quite a bit. Kahina Zadi got another beating and reminds me of a hunter from a joke about a bear, so I would rather ask: "Kahina, didn't you actually come here to catch a murderer?" A long, touching story about early motherhood was added to the amateur police work, and I was once again far from satisfied. ()

Episode 6 (2016) (E06) 

angielski Well, hat off to the screenwriter, Evelina commits suicide and after her death, it turns out that she was pregnant, great. But now suddenly I find out that her body was never found, so some witch (or goblin) determined the pregnancy? Even the fantastic hospital in Lebanon amused me, if I had known about it earlier, I wouldn't have had to be a cripple:-) ()

Episode 7 (2016) (E07) 

angielski The seventh episode was actually more watchable and would be even better if the creators had spared us the desperate cliché. The waterfall was fine the whole time, but because something was found beneath it today, there is an immediate threat that the rock will collapse. Are you serious? Another "great" jab was the action of cunning French people who don't know where to stuff their uranium anymore. ()

Episode 8 (2016) (E08) 

angielski The final episode brought an unusually large series of dramatic moments, and if I wasn't completely indifferent to the fates of the individual characters, I would probably have bitten all my nails. However, the creators made an effort throughout the series not to involve me in the plot, so I can congratulate them, their effort was successful. I was most impressed by the dramatic pause, after which the dispatcher announced with a face reflecting growing desperation that all the pumps were turned off. Who would have expected that? ()
