This is about acting performances of today that are based on acting performances of yesterday. Much has been written on this account and I would be glad if there were more people interested in the real careers of Bette and Joan before 1945, as their swan songs were really only one chapter of many. Either way, Murphy is a good guide to the classics for today's pop enthusiasts who would otherwise ignore classic Hollywood.
