Elena is a frail 55 years-old woman, confined within the walls of her house and forced to shield her face with a veil - the only time she can go outside is in the evening to bathe in the river. She is revered by her peers because of her privileged, crucial role as the keeper of the community's history, traditions and oral epics. Yet today's youth considers being binokuts anachronistic; they can't imagine sacrificing their lives for the higher purpose of serving their tribe and preserving their culture. Letty, Elena's 15-years-old granddaughter, is the first in line to succeed her, but she doesn't want to give up spending time with friends and falling in love, to carry out the binukot tradition. Elena is old-fashioned, thus strictly against her lifestyle, but after she acknowledges Letty's needs, she fights the demons who threaten her granddaughter's right to be free.
