This VICE special report takes a hard look at the promises and politics that have fed America's overcrowded prison system for the past 30 years, as well as how Congress and the President are coming together to implement prison reforms in a country which espouses freedom, but incarcerates 25% of the world's prison population. The special is highlighted by an exclusive visit by VICE founder Shane Smith with Barack Obama inside the El Reno Federal Prison in Oklahoma, in which the President ruminates on the causes and casualties of America's mass-incarceration initiatives before meeting face-to-face with six inmates, each of whom received plea-bargain sentences for nonviolent, drug-related crimes. Fixing the System also includes profiles of several inmates and their families, interviews with authorities including former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. District Court Judge John Gleeson, and case-study looks at what is being done to appeal harsh sentences while preparing inmates for life outside of prison.
