Pravčická brána is one of the most popular natural Czech monuments. Not only it is an interesting tourist attraction, but from a scientific point of view, it is also full of mysteries that have bewildered a good number of geologists. Marek Hlaváč therefore decided to take on one of these mysteries and has made a gripping popular science documentary about the origin and character of natural sandstone arches. He nevertheless takes a strictly scientific approach to the subject and makes use of the expertise and curiosity of a team of Czech geologists who are highly knowledgeable in the field and not afraid to experiment. The main goal is to discover how the sandstone rocks erode and form natural sandstone arches over time. Hlaváč gives the scientists an opportunity to show the character of the sandstone rocks by means of simple experiments, but he also studies local specifics of other sandstone rock formations and buildings, including the Saint Wenceslas Cathedral and Skalní město (Rock Town). The scientists' findings could eventually help to prevent similar rock formations from collapsing. (Academia Film Olomouc)
