Young Petőfi Zoltán the son of the great Hungarian poet, Petőfi Sándor, feels as though he were a stranger in the house of his mother and stepfather. His mother, however, reminds him that all this is the reflection of his father's glory. Exasperated, he immediately leaves Debrecen and becomes a strolling player. Being physically weak, he can hardly put up with the poverty he is in. He is often ill. He learns from the newspaper that his mother is seriously ill. He is on his way to Pest.
