Reżyser filmu Witalij Manski był szefem departamentu dokumentalnego rosyjskiej telewizji publicznej, kiedy kraj przechodził z epoki Jelcyna do autorytarnego reżimu Putina. Był świadkiem tego, jak Putin podjął pierwsze kroki, aby zlikwidować demokratyczne reformy Jelcyna. Na podstawie unikatowych materiałów z lat 1999-2000, relacji świadków oraz własnych doświadczeń stworzył niezwykle intymny portret Władimira Putina i przełomowego okresu w historii Rosji. He’s such an asshole that you can’t even make an interesting documentary about him. There were a couple of scenes that caught my attention, for example the one with the new (old) national anthem, which I would have much preferred to see a separate documentary about, but otherwise it was mostly an extremely drawn-out bore.

An interesting behind-the-scenes look at Putin's candidacy and election process, and into Boris Yeltsin's privacy. The actual records from Putin's first year in office are not as telling and they are, above all, shallow - including moments when Putin talks to the director and speaks directly to the camera. The documentary is presented as anti-Putin from the beginning, but of course only what Putin allowed the filmmakers to shoot appears in it.
