It seems like a normal day in the mine for a close-knit group of veteran miners all friends and family; all having worked together for years. Except today is different, when a rookie (the son of one of the veterans) joins the workforce, and although there have been safety concerns, management refuses to shut down work and lose the money. Fate takes matters into its own hands, when a huge methane explosion rips through their lives, trapping everyone, and forcing them to engage brains, brawn, and faulty rescuers. Beautifully building high tension and always unpredictable, Mine 9 is the story of the struggle for survival against all odds; men trapped in hell as the result of exploitation, greed, and circumstance. Two miles underground, nine miners fight for their lives after a methane explosion and with one hour of oxygen. A decently filmed claustrophobic survival movie that manages to be both suspenseful and unexpectedly gritty (the hand sawing is one of the most intense scenes in the film). I didn't form much of a relationship with the characters and it takes half an hour for the fight for life to begin, but after that it's definitely something to watch. The film is highly praised abroad (78%), and for an indie production it's great. 6/10.
