Belle, a young American girl staying in Professor Blanchon's villa near Geneva, is found strangled. Suspicions immediately turn to Blanchon, who is not the culprit. As the cross-examining goes on, he realizes that this girl, whom he didn't pay any attention to, secretly loved him. Love has passed him by and as a result he is forced to reconsider the mediocre life he leads with his wife. Exonerated of the crime, he hangs around bars and meets Alice.
