We Are Forbidden

In Nepal, menstruating girls and women are considered impure. This stigma permeates every aspect of their lives. They are forbidden from eating most foods. They are either banished from their homes or sequestered to one room. And they are prevented from attending school, visiting a temple, or touching or even gazing upon the faces of male family members. In this participant-driven documentary, nine girls who range in age from twelve to eighteen tell their menstruation stories and offer their hopes for an end to menstrual stigma in Nepal.
