The Obituarist

The task of summing up a life may be full of sadness, but not for Sarah Fitzsimmons, who sees great beauty in her profession as the staff obituary writer. She loves learning about lives well-lived, which serve as a stark contrast to her own life– a typical millennial existence where a child has gone to college and done well, only to move back home and take a job that she never envisioned herself having. Her loving, hovering parents want more for her than the drab job of writing about dead people. But she is less hard on herself about her current situation — that is, until she starts comparing the fascinating lives that she’s writing about to her own and recognizes all that she is missing.
