Opisy(1)

There are no people in Last and First Men, but the film does feature three very special protagonists: the concrete testimonies of Yugoslavian brutalism, Tilda Swinton’s voice and the music of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who composed the soundtracks for Sicario and Arrival and who died in 2018 at the age of 48. Jóhannsson made several Super 8 and 16mm shorts and often used visual elements when performing his musical works. The idea for his first feature-length film came to him in 2010 when he saw Dutch photographer Jan Kempenaers’ images of the colossal monuments of the Tito era. Jóhannsson, an avid reader of science fiction, accompanies his 16mm black-and-white footage with excerpts from British author and philosopher Olaf Stapledon’s eponymous visionary 1930 novel, read ethereally by Tilda Swinton. Last and First Men is a hypnotic total work of art, a requiem for the universe containing echoes of Kubrick, Tarr and the avant-garde that turns cinema into a pure synthesis of sounds and images; a place of the impossible, where the deepest past meets the most distant future. angielski Brutalism from outer space. A requiem for humanity, which combines the hypnagogic voice over of Tilda Swinton, the slow movement of a 70mm camera and Johann's typically frilled sound design, which begins to resonate somewhere in the large intestine, to immediately thereafter control all your receptors. These are more so museum installations than a film. But also more of a film than most films. ()

angielski The movie Last and First Men is first and foremost an exhibition of the cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grøvlen's (Another Round) technical abilities, the compositional brilliance of Jóhann Jóhannsson, and only after that, is it a narrative piece. I have nothing against it - I felt hypnotically immersed in its audiovisual experience during the screening, however, despite that I cannot promise that I am going to look back on it as a comprehensive viewing experience. In any case, I am glad that I was able to enjoy this work in the environment of an appropriately technically equipped movie theater because watching it at home in terms of limited video and sound equipment would have completely missed the point of the movie. angielski A prayer for the human soul. Stapledon’s meditations (read by the always terrifying Tilda Swinton) on our future is, thanks to Jóhannsson’s captivating music, limited to the length of one CD. The projected booklet of photos of bewitching Bosnians who survived the Second World War form a fitting background to the rise and fall of the human race. A powerful experience. I would like to see it on the big screen someday. The normal power of telepathic communication is now so unreliable that we have been compelled to fall back upon the archaic practice of vocal symbolism. ()
