A war drama in which there is no fighting that makes your blood run cold, and yet it speaks volumes about war. And I certainly don't begrudge the film a bit of romance combined with beautiful music. When else to encounter a fateful love than in a heightened time when life is at stake? The first part is more engaging and suspenseful than the second, but overall, the story of a German deserter to the Red Army captivated me enough to remember it for a long time. (80%)
