Apart from tulips and windmills, Holland is internationally known for its soft drug policy. Anybody can enter a Dutch "coffeeshop" and enjoy a joint legally. The coffeshop was a symbol of Dutch tolerance and freedom for 30 years, but the cannabis industry seems to be losing its innocence these days. Selling the stuff through the front door may be legal, but the supply at the back door has never been properly regulated and is subject to increasing pressure from the authorities. Dutch Weed steps through the coffeeshops' back door, and offers insight into a world where the idealism of the hippie generation is losing out to the greed and violence of organized crime. The police are increasing their efforts to suppress the cultivation of the plant. One constant factor is the ever-increasing price of marihuana, making the potential profits ever bigger. The result is predictable and alarming. The police are doing everything they can to stop cannabis cultivation and literally eradicate this weed from the garden of society. Dutch Weed shows the hilarious but also alarming game of cat and mouse between growers, coffeeshop owners, police, and the justice system. All that fuss about a little weed.
