Kachalka

A tyre instead of a punch bag, the wheel of an armoured vehicle instead of a weight. The Kachalka outdoor gym, built out of scrap metal in Soviet times, still attracts visitors as a mecca for Kyiv sports. Old and young, rich and poor come here. The Kachalka (the Ukrainian word for gym), located in the very heart of Kyiv, is open to all for free and never closes. The roughly welded fitness machines found here probably began to emerge during the 1970s, made from household items or whatever could be stolen from factories. To this day, the place thrives thanks to volunteers who repair the machines in their free time and set the rules.
