The film is based on an important work of the world's literature, the first so-called gothic novel by Horacio Walpole. The story is narrated in an ironic quasi-documentary form as a reconstruction of a real event that happened many years ago. The film is dedicated to all researchers that based their lives on mystification. (oficjalny tekst dystrybutora)

Jan Švankmajer considered the so-called gothic novel to be one of the starting points of his work, and its elements appeared in a number of Švankmajer's works. In the Otrant Castle, which is both a adaptation of the original gothic novel and a charming mystification, this source of inspiration is manifested perhaps most strongly. A funny matter that seems to have been partially inspired by Jára Cimrman's theater as well. Overall impression: 90%. ()
