Markku Pätilä

Born in Tampere/Finland, Markku studied art in Boston from1974-75 at the school of the museum of fine arts and at the Hochschule fuer Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, Austria from 1978-79. He has twice won the Jussi Award in Finland for best production design of the year, and has been nominated for the Jussi Award 4 times and nominated for best production design of the year in Europe.

He is known for strong colours and extraordinary and unusual sets for both film and theatre. His artwork has been exhibited widely in Finland, the US, Austria, and Switzerland. He has designed sets for some 30 feature films and 10 television series. He has worked with directors on such films as Aki Kaurismäki's DRIFTING CLOUDS, JUHA, MAN WITHOUT A PAST, TEN MINUTES OLDER and LIGHTS IN THE DUSK; Aleksi Salmenperä's: MANS JOB, BAD FAMILY, DISTURBING FACT; and Aku Louhimies' KÄSKY.

He has also worked as an Art Director for commercial directors, Errol Morris and Pierre Winther. THE GIRL KING was the second feature with Mika Kaurismäki, previously they worked together on BROTHERS.
