Biografia

He joins the National University’s Film School (CUEC) in 1967. During that time, he works as Walter Reuter’s assistant and participates in three plays: El corrido de Pablo Damián, La ópera de los tres centavos, and Orfeo. In 1968, he directs and co-authors his first short film, La Sorpresa, co-directs the play Esperpentos along with José Estrada and in 1969 he makes El Quelite, his first feature film. He receives an Ariel (Best Director) for Nosotros in 1971. He’s worked for the filmmakers and film technicians’ union. In 1993 he received a medal of merit from the Mexican Writers Guild (SOGEM) in honor of his 25-year career as a filmmaker. He’s been a FONCA fellow, received grants from the Guggenheim foundation. In1998 the Houston Pan-Cultural Film Festival pays tribute to his work, and Ancestral Films gives him a recognition for his contribution to the development of the cinematographic arts. That same year, he’s elected president of the committee of The Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. The XX Guadalajara International Film Festival celebrates his work and pays tribute to his career and receives the Mayahuel de plata for his 35 years in film.
