Oppenheimer (2023)

angielski This epic film about the life of theoretical physicist and father of the atomic bomb Robert Oppenheimer is not so much a standard biographical drama as it is a modernistic dramatic political thriller in which two narrative lines alternate across several time planes. Shot with intense filmmaking vigour, Oppenheimer offers an informationally rich display of ambitious, intelligent and intriguing characters and clever dialogue that doesn’t let us catch our breath. This fierce and dynamic film with an impressively complex structure built on the conflict between two egotistical men and the story of one scientist’s struggle to save his own soul poses questions relating to the transformation of civilisation after the invention of nuclear weapons and the ethical aspect of their use, as well as the willingness of people to take risks for the sake of glory and the ascendancy of the possibility of global destruction, which is still relevant today.

Czas krwawego księżyca (2023)

angielski Killers of the Flower Moon is a monumental and masterfully written, acted and directed lament for the decline of society that slowly and forcefully delves into the darkness of America’s controversial history with a focus on the nature of evil in a story about the covered-up crimes perpetrated against the indigenous population in the name of the desire for power and wealth. It is an epic portrait of the United States built precisely on a mixture of gangster movies and westerns, two American genres based on the thematisation of amoral behaviour.

Biedne istoty (2023)

angielski Poor Things is Yorgos Lanthimos’s most extravagant film yet, and that’s saying a lot. One of the most distinctive contemporary filmmakers properly broke free of his chains and, furthermore, had a lot of money to bring his far-out visions to life. The result is a complex, impertinently entertaining and bountifully bizarre comedy with a Frankenstein motive about one woman’s emancipatory journey to get to know the world and herself. A woman with the body of an adult and the mind of her own unborn child, whom we follow through a narrative arranged in chapters during her travels around Europe, as she breaks every conceivable social convention, gradually tripping up the patriarchy and finally putting a knife in its back as she undergoes complete accelerated development from a curious toddler to a naïve adolescent to an eloquent intellectual with her own clear opinion on the state of things. With its intelligent dialogue, well-thought-out concept, topical subject, intoxicating visuals, gripping acting performances, devilishly morbid ideas and a lot of nudity, Poor Things is like a fine wine. Oscar nominations are inevitable.

Setki bobrów (2022)

angielski An extraordinary torrent of creativity in the best comedy of recent years and, at the same time, a surprising update of slapstick for the 21st century. It’s as if Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd joined hands with Bugs Bunny and Wile E. Coyote, with the late, great Czech fantasy director Karel Zeman in the director’s chair, having just discovered the possibilities of computer graphics. This film is definitive confirmation of the proposition that a small budget is not an obstacle when you have enough ideas and creative ability. In the case of Hundreds of Beavers, the filmmakers have ideas in spades and they pack so many of them into the film that they easily fill the whole runtime, thus turning the limited resources for making the film into a strength, so the result, including the visual aspect, is outrageously funny, creative and endearing. The plot never slows down for even a minute, the individual gags progressively evolve and build up to unpredictable levels, and the film works superbly with the characters and recurring motifs while making full use of the snow-covered forest setting and the associated props. Hundreds of Beavers is a unique film and clearly a future cult classic.

Bulion i inne namiętności (2023)

angielski The ultimate food-porn. A supreme tribute to French gastronomy, in which most of the characters are hedonists and gourmets, top chefs and experts in the areas of food, animals and nature. They’re also great conversationalists, so they also talk about food and its origins and history in an exquisite way. A large part of the film is composed of scenes of cooking refined dishes and their subsequent consumption, for which viewers are prepared in the opening half-hour sequence featuring dancing between cooktops and serving on the table, accompanied only by the ambient sounds of the kitchen and epicurean sighs. The connective tissue between courses is a tender romantic storyline in which expressions of love are never delivered without a candlelit dinner and the shared stirring of vegetable broth or Burgundy sauce is a prelude to intimate moments. A film in which the way to one’s heart is really through their stomach and in which even the anatomical description of eating sounds like love poetry.

John Wick 4 (2023)

angielski Chapter 4 is most sweeping John Wick yet and one of the current highlights of the action genre. It’s no longer just an adrenaline-fuelled action experience, but a carefully constructed narrative of a fatalistic story about a man who has to kill because he has no choice, finding himself in a deadly spiral of revenge and unfinished business. The action is powerfully effective, impactful, elegant, imaginative, clear and visually intoxicating. In terms of their length and overall execution, all of the action sequences are absolutely monumental and each of them could easily serve as the climax of many other action films. Moreover, thanks to the changes in setting, filming, stylisation and background music, they are completely different every time, which adds to the film’s multifariousness, effectively avoiding the routine and monotony despite the repetitive fighting techniques, blows and moves. Of course, Keanu Reeves is god-like, but Donnie Yen is absolutely excellent here and I would like to see a separate film featuring his character.

Chhello Show (2021)

angielski An unsentimentally emotional and beautifully shot film about the love of film and old cinemas. Serving as a tribute to cinema and the world’s directors, Last Film Show tells the story of a journey to find one’s heart in spite of family traditions and predestination, and it succeeds completely as a social drama with a dash of culinary cinema, while also refreshingly thematizing film from the material perspective and capturing the death of the film medium in an extraordinary way.

Elvis (2022)

angielski In the first half of Elvis, emphasis is placed on, among other things, the rebellious Elvis’s clashes with the censorship board, which considers his gyrations to be obscene, whereas the second half focuses primarily on Presley’s conflicts with the people close to him, whose expectations he either refuses to meet on principle or, to his own disappointment, he is unable to meet. A running theme throughout the film consists in Elvis’s steadfast effort to preserve his own exceptional personal and musical identity, which is the only key to the artist’s success and immortality. The charismatic Austin Butler, a gifted singer in his own right, is absolutely excellent in the title role. He is not only able to captivate without batting an eye during the fantastically filmed musical numbers, but he also manages to naturally and sensitively convey a broad range of emotions even in the quieter moments. Most of the supporting and peripheral roles are also well cast according to type. Of course, the great Tom Hanks has the most space in the film as Presley’s manager and as the narrator, who in his commentary repeatedly tries to convince us that he always meant well by his charge, but his actions, captured by his image, tell us the opposite is true. His perspective as an unreliable narrator naturally complements Elvis’s perspective and the film is based substantially on the transformations of their friendship and family/business relationship. The story adheres to a precisely rhythmized structure, in which Elvis’s performances always comprise the climax of individual segments and time periods. Director Baz Luhrmann does his best work since Moulin Rouge and he also excels as a phenomenal audio-visual storyteller and master of the edited montage, who needs only a few two-second shots and appropriate musical backing to instantly capture the right mood of the given moment, setting and circumstance with unparalleled brilliance. In the genre of biopics about music legends, Elvis is a gem that presents its title character in many different situations and styles, engages your interest regardless of whether or not you know his life story and songs, and simply cannot conceal the identity of its director thanks to Luhrmann’s many recognizable trademarks and filmmaking techniques. From the opening scene onwards, it is an audio-visually riveting and engaging film that demands to be seen on the big screen.

Czego nauczyła mnie ośmiornica (2020)

angielski This is a fragile and completely unique documentary about an unexpected friendship between a curious cephalopod and a burnt-out filmmaker who spent most of his life with him while daily diving. The film is an original, emotional and sometimes thrilling connection between the world of people and the world of animals, finding unifying parallels in the lives of both protagonists and casually encouraging understanding of nature from a completely different point of view.

David Attenborough: Życie na naszej planecie (2020)

angielski David Attenborough talks about his life and provides, against the background of the changes that have taken place on Earth in recent decades, a clear and plainly understandable appeal about environmental topics. The film thus serves not only as a perfect recapitulation of the career of this famous documentary filmmaker, but also as an important message about the state of the environment. However, instead of looking for culprits, the film provides constructive proposals and visions.
