The Djinn (2021)

angielski Alone at home with ghosts, or another boring cheap crap that critics overhyped! I really don't know which horror film pissed me off more this year, but Djinn can shake hands with The Vigil and The Night because all three seem equally boring, uninteresting, and pointless to me. The protagonist is a little boy who is mute, asthmatic, has a huge scar on his chest, and oddly enough, he's not autistic or in a wheelchair so that the viewer can empathize with him even more. I was hoping it would be a variation of Wishmaster, but there’s no interesting wish-fulfillment or tasks, you can forget about that straight away. The main character performs a spell from a book and wishes to regain his voice, but that summons a supernatural entity to his house and he must survive an hour with it for the spell to come true. The Djinn can take on the form of different people, so there's either disgusting black CGI smoke, which I hate, or it haunts as an ordinary guy like the father of the ain protagonist! There was even a female presence, but overall it's crap. There is almost no dialogue, not even a single jump scare! Of course, there's no gore, no body count, the plot is pointless, the atmosphere is sterile, and there's no entertainment. Last year's Come Play is really two levels above this, and if you didn't like that one, then don't waste your time with this one at all. Even with a short running time of 80 minutes, it felt like the film just didn't want to end. 3/10.

Ci, którzy życzą mi śmierci (2021)

angielski Taylor Sheridan has set the bar very high with his films, so complaining that this isn't another Wind River seems naive to me (after all, his debut is a B-horror film called Vile), and although this film has a few flaws, it is still a solid, intense, and atmospheric thriller with a touch of the 90s that I enjoyed. The story takes place in the beautiful Montana wilderness with the even more beautiful Angelina Jolie, who at 45 still unbelievable. She is well supported by Punisher and a brother duo of killers (Little Finger and Nux). The action is not much in the end, but when it happens, it's quite intense, the weapons sound great, and the R-rating is used to its full potential. Personally, I would have loved to see twenty hitmen running in that burning forest and watch Angelina and Punisher eliminate them using traps, but I guess that's asking for too much. Anyway, the atmosphere is great, there's plenty of tension, the visuals and actors are fantastic, and the pace holds up decently, so I don't have many reasons to criticize it. However, those who can't enjoy the film because of occasional illogical behavior or a few cliched deviations are accidentally watching a different genre. 7/10.

Kobieta w oknie (2021)

angielski This light mystery thriller in the style of the 1990 on Netflix is a pretty decent genre snack, but it's missing drive, darkness, style, mystery, and violence. The story focuses on Amy Adams, an agoraphobic, who spies on her neighbors across the street and witnesses a murder. No one believes her, and the question is whether she is crazy or everyone is trying to cover up the evidence. The film keeps the viewer in suspense until the last minutes, and the final reveal is actually surprising. I didn't expect it from any of the possible scenarios I had prepared, and I appreciate and welcome it. The impressive cast is also good, although most of the familiar faces appear for only a few minutes. The music is decent, and there is one unexpected jump-scare that is well done. The finale is quite thrilling, so I don't have a significant problem with the film, but compared to similar thrillers in recent times such as Gone Girl and Run, The Woman in the Window seems a bit weaker. It is still watchable, though, and female viewers with a glass of wine in hand will definitely enjoy it. 6.5/10.

Miłość, śmierć i roboty - Volume 2 (2021) (seria)

angielski Finally, Netflix delivers the long-awaited second season of Love, Death & Robots, and compared to the first one, it's a bit disappointing. Shortening eighteen episodes to eight already hurts a bit, and there's also less action and gore, and no erotica whatsoever, but it's still above-average entertainment. The only weak episode is the 1st, called Ice. Unfortunately, there is no second Secret War or Sonnie's Edge. The best one, without a doubt, is story number four, Snow in the Desert, a post-apocalyptic mix with Star Wars. It has amazing CGI, great brutal action, uncompromising gore, great music, and a well-imagined world. Definitely the winner. The second place goes to story number three, Forbidden Fruit, a futuristic sci-fi thriller with an interesting idea, great visuals, and shocking climax. Brilliant. The third place goes to story number five, Tall Grass. It has interesting animation, Lovecraft, tall grass (Stephen King), and a horror atmosphere. Nice. The fourth place is story number seven, The Drowned Giant, dark sci-fi with excellent CGI, starring Michael B. Jordan. It has a raw atmosphere, a destroyed world, an unpleasant robot, and a nicely crushed hand. The fifth place is story number six, Christmas Spirit. A short but original idea, where instead of Santa Claus, a nicely made Monster delivers gifts – the children would definitely behave. The sixth place is story number one, Automated Customer Service. A robotic vacuum cleaner goes mad and develops a taste for killing. Original, entertaining, with a nice yoga-shotgun fatality and a decent twist. The seventh place is story number eight, The Drowned Giant. A bit like Gulliver's Travels, where the corpse of a giant washes up on the beach, attracting the attention of the locals. Slower, but definitely interesting. The eighth place is story number two, Ice. Definitely the weakest of the series. The comic book visuals are fine, and Leviathan is good, but otherwise it’s average. It was enjoyable, above average, but next time I would definitely welcome more action than philosophizing. 8/10.

Goemon (2009)

angielski I'm glad I finally caught up on this Japanese classic. Honestly, ten years ago I might have been excited, but today I had trouble finishing the film. Firstly, there is too little action for my taste and the plot is uninteresting. If only it wasn’t fictional and based on proper historical facts, it could have been more engaging. The action itself is, of course, exaggerated, drawing heavily from anime, and the effects are not worth much anymore. Fortunately, there is plenty of blood, but it's just CGI trickery. The half-hour action-packed finale is nice, though, and has a certain charm, but the hour and a half before that was painful. 5/10.

Kung-fu szał (2004)

angielski This kung-fu classic that parodies kung-fu movies is relatively cool, but after it has aged quite a bit after all these years. I found only about three scenes that were truly funny, and the fights are okay, although the wire work is a bit overdone. It is an entertaining movie, but Shaolin Soccer is closer to my heart. 6/10.

Ludojad (2021)

angielski After a long time, we get a shark horror movie, and although I wanted to be nicer, because you don't see shark movies every week, this is not worth mentioning much. Five people get stranded on a raft after their seaplane is destroyed 100 km from the shore, and a hungry shark swims around them. A thematically classic template and nothing new, which wouldn't be a problem if they had focused on other aspects, but those are also missing here. There is no gore to speak of (there is one half-eaten nice corpse, but that's not enough for me). The rest is just submersion and blood floating up. Well, if this impresses someone today, then I don't know. The atmosphere is zero, the tension lasts maybe 10 minutes at the end, but overall it's very weak in all aspects. At least, it's nice to look at the girls. Those who have a weakness for sharks will be happy even with this little. The rest can skip it. 4/10.

My First Day (2017)

angielski A funny horror short that fully utilizes the whole minute and a half! A young boy is getting ready for his first day at a special school, which for "different" kids :) It's great. 8/10:

Losses (2011)

angielski An eager action short with a decent dose of action (shooting and one decent fight). The slightly chaotic cinematography and editing are a bit annoying, but considering it's an amateur effort, I'm willing to overlook it. I enjoyed it. Decent. 7/10.
