Little Necro Red (2019)

angielski Italian butcher Giulio De Santi has made another gorefest for a fringe audience, but unfortunately it doesn't even come close to his top creation Hotel Inferno 2. Whereas Hotel Inferno 2 had a great atmosphere, perfect setting, cool lines, wonderful music, references to maybe 20 years of games maybe, great first person cinematography, never ending carnage that didn't deal with unnecessary dialogue and great gore, all that's left here is the gore and even that is unfortunately too overdone. The film tries to have a plot that is just weird, it makes no sense, nobody cares about it, and I had absolutely no idea what it was about. There is no main character and a lot of time is spent in a kitchen with two women drinking, smoking and cooking eggs; I really don't care for that in splatter and as the sight of two non-actors is downright painful – it was a tedious ordeal in places. It bothered me that there is more talking than cutting and even when there is cutting there are two characters doing it whom I know nothing about, and mostly all the gore scenes focus on the head (brain, eyes, teeth), and when you see that twenty times it feels repetitive and uninteresting. I was also bothered by the fact that they use no weapons, here all it takes is someone's hand to rip someone's heart out of their body, so there are no ideas. The humour is also lacking and the make-up effects are eager, but what good is it when you spend more than half the film listening to lame dialogue, watching annoying actors, and visually the film is probably even cheaper than Hotel Inferno. 4/10.

Zło czyha za drzwiami (2020)

angielski A mainstream horror film from Sweden in the style of Come Play. The story is classic and unremarkable: a family moves into a house where the son befriends a demon that lives there. The film is more or less just about three characters and takes place in the house most of the time. Stepmom Dilan Gwyn is beautiful and the demon's appearance alone is properly creepy, but it's a shame that he doesn't get more space until the last third, and nothing much interesting happens for more than half the film. It's skillfully shot, the atmosphere is pretty tense in places, the soundtrack is properly unpleasant, but the jump-scares don't really work, and there's no proper danger to anyone, which is also a minus. When will I finally see a ghost that starts killing people, so that it will earn the respect of the viewers? Fans of mainstream ghost stories won't waste their time with this, but those who have more under their belt won't get past the average. 6/10.

Siedem lat jednej nocy (2018)

angielski After three years of waiting I finally got to see it and unfortunately I am disappointed. It's more of a revenge drama than a thriller, there is no action, which sucks when Jang Dong-gun is available. The story focuses on a man who accidentally hits a little girl with his car (the strongest scene of the film) and dumps her body in a lake. Her father is a feared man and decides to find the culprit no matter what it takes. Beautifully shot, the cinematography and visuals are of a very high standard, the actors are also excellent, but I missed the suspense. The atmosphere is thicker only at the end and the Koreans avoid violence this time, which is a pity, because I was expecting the works and as a result I leave with an uneasy three-star rating. It's a good film, it just didn't really grab me and keep me interested. 6/10.

Cherry: Niewinność utracona (2021)

angielski An unexpected gem that took my breath away! Cherry is heavy-handed, uncomfortable, disturbing, psychologically dense with some strong scenes, and definitely not for the faint of heart. Cherry is to the drama genre what The Human Centipede is to horror, and I have to applaud. You will be sick and nauseous, squirming like an earthworm, but fascinated, shocked, surprised and delighted at the same time. For a drama, it's definitely powerful! The Russo Brothers serve up a formally polished and dense story with Tom Holland at his best, reaching his own bottom and delivering the most impressive performance of his career. He may very well be at the top of his game amongst teenage actors at the moment. The film starts out as a very nice and easygoing romance that soon turns into a war hell in Iraq, where there were also intestines and burnt corpses, the training of the soldiers is one of the best I have ever seen in the war genre, and if I thought that this would be the highlight of the whole film, I was wrong, because right after that we watch the disintegration of human personality in the most horrible form. The film takes the best of Euphoria and Requiem for a Dream and I don't think I've ever seen a junkie's lair so authentically and uncomfortably portrayed – shit, vomit, syringes everywhere – followed by well shot bank robberies. I was already wondering that if in the last 20 minutes the film turned into a rape and revenge drama, it would be the top of the list and I'll be taken away. I haven't seen such a beautiful blending of genres so intense and powerful in a long time. I'm tempted to watch it again, I have to give it full marks. Nothing for the weak! 8.5/10.

Yes Day (2021)

angielski For a Netflix family comedy, it's a fine entertainment with a nice idea that had me smiling from start to finish. Jennifer Garner and Jenna Ortega are very nice to look at and the idea of parents having to answer everything to Yes is pretty original. The supporting characters are funny (the policeman, the gym teacher with croquet and the paramedic), the film flows well, some of the scenes are downright cool (the party at the house). I have a soft spot for comedies, I laughed more than I expected, so I'm happy to overrate. Together with Instant Family probably the most feel good family comedy in recent times. 7/10.

Gotowy na wszystko (2018)

angielski Quite nicely made and quite possibly the last good film with Van Damme. Story-wise it's kind of standard and unfortunately there's not much action, but the film flows well and the atmosphere is quite bleak. 6/10.

Skok na głęboką wodę (2021)

angielski The fans of Money Heist who are anxiously awaiting Season 5 will be delighted with The Vault as we take another look at the National Bank of Spain. Jaume Balagueró, who was in solid horror form ten years ago, but hasn't made anything decent since Sleep Tight in 2011, and even though I'd rather see a new horror film from him, I'm happy with this one as well. I do like heist films and The Vault is definitely a nicely made, stylish, suspenseful, well acted and clever thriller full of interesting ideas. The set-up itself is admittedly more suspenseful than the actual heist, which probably shouldn't be the case, but I had a good time. 7.5/10.

Gwilliam (2015)

angielski Disgusting and weird for sure, but nothing subversive or brutal. Anyway, interesting idea. 6/10.

Other Side of the Box (2018)

angielski An excellent, atmospheric, disturbing and really unpleasantly chilling short, which made me quite swayed. The protagonist receives as a gift a strange box that has disturbing and mysterious contents! Very suspenseful, well thought out, the atmosphere is thick and chills are guaranteed. 8/10.

WandaVision (2021) (serial)

angielski I didn't expect Marvel to become drama anymore either. Ironically, the best episodes are the first two, where at least the humor works, but once it switches to a more serious note and starts discussing scientific, physical, and family bullshit, I found the show incredibly maddening. The action is only there in the last episode and it sucked. It felt like a cheap teen soap from the 2000's and it's boring as fuck on top of that. I fell asleep during four episodes out of nine and nothing has managed to do that in a long time. I suffered so much that I couldn't make it through more than two episodes in a day, and they are only half an hour long. Nothing for me and I'm honestly relieved it's over. 4/10.
