Oto jest głowa zdrajcy (1966)

angielski One of those great historical films where there's a lot of talk, but not idle talk. The main conflict is thought-provoking even today, thanks to the perfectly honed dialogue that made it to the screen from the stage, and if you like The Lion in Winter, Beckett, or Mary, Queen of Scots, feel free.

Smętarz dla zwierzaków (2019)

angielski I can't say I was directly expecting it, but Pet Sematary is a great honest-to-goodness horror film. It takes the essentials from King's premise, and isn't afraid to play with them in such a way that the result is surprising even to someone who knows it, yet the outcome remains 100% King. During a few scenes there was a completely sepulchral silence in a reasonably full theater, which I think says it all. I cared about the characters and as time went on I became uncertain of almost everything and enjoyed it immensely. Jason Clarke fits the role perfectly and I enjoyed him as much as John Lithgow, the music by horror expert Christopher Young is also good, you hardly notice it while watching but it's worth a separate listen. I'm just supremely satisfied, despite the fact that I was looking forward to the Frankenstein madness of the book and got something completely different (but just as good). It all culminated in an extremely tense finale in a misty graveyard... and the ending! It wasn't a Stephen King ending, it was a Richard Bachman ending!

Hellboy (2019)

angielski My fears were confirmed, this is not at all the Hellboy I wanted to see. I know, maybe they couldn't even manage to cram the bulk of Mignola's years of universe building into a two-hour film that is also not a sequel and has to introduce Hellboy and the team. Someone has tried, and it was a suicide attempt – cheap, unimaginative, overstuffed, and at times (as the trailers warned) almost TV boring and awkward looking. It's similar to the comics in plot, but hardly at all in mood. The film seems to try to mask its lack of atmosphere with gore and all sorts of fucking, but it doesn't even manage to do that properly, and I wasn't particularly curious about anything like that. Hellboy is supposed to be poetic, doom-laden, dramatic, horrific, and yet still entertaining (like the books, like Del Toro's vision), especially since the filmmakers chose The Wild Hunt and The Storm and the Fury as their templates; yet this reboot is none of those things. It can only look up to Del Toro's magical films (and sometimes seems to) because it's worse in every way... Production design? Ridiculously simple. Potentially interesting or entertaining characters? Laughable (poor Lobster). Perhaps everything and everyone lacks heart, and unfortunately that includes Hellboy himself. David Harbour may be a likable actor who won me over in Stranger Things, but he wears a much worse mask than Ron Perlman, and underneath it he overacts, hollers, and prances unnecessarily. Why? If Mike Mignola likes it that way, that's his business. I, however, will continue to prefer to read his books and watch Del Toro's movies, in which Hellboy is Hellboy and which, while they follow their own path, at least have clarity and are not so damn stupid.___P.S. The misery was quite enhanced by the "cool at all costs" Czech subtitles, which sometimes were not even translations but completely made up (probably for dubbing purposes).

Shazam! (2019)

angielski It’s hard to think of a funnier comic book film, and not just lately, either. Billy Batson is, in short, a hero Marvel can only envy from their DC competition. No muscleman with the soul of a teenager, which we have seen so many times... But a teenager with a muscleman body enjoying his newfound abilities exactly as you’d expect from a teenage boy. Original, impressive, sympathetic and 100% successful. Great fun for a mass audience doesn't have to simply arise from a flood of more or less well-off, mostly cheap jokes (right, Deadpool?), it can still be playful and clever, and makes sure not to forget about the story and characters in it. Luckily. And besides all that, Shazam! also impressed me in part by the old-fashioned way in which it is filmed. It looks like that a lot of decorations are really just decorations, not digital special effects, and the sculptures of seven sins with ominously blazing eyes as if they fell out of films like Ghostbusters or The Golden Child (and when they come alive, the monsters are digital, but they look like they are rubber) and everything is accompanied by an amazing orchestral soundtrack.

Potrójna granica (2019)

angielski A boyish spectacle of the Michael Caine's Play Dirty / John Frankenheimer's The TrainKelly's Heroes type. Clearly written characters, a clearly given situation, and a clear plan that just has to get messed up somehow – not once and not a little. The literally stellar cast pulls it together nicely and no one sticks out, the direction also sticks pleasantly to the ground and makes the action and pure adventure scenes as believable as it gets. Plus, I liked that the film managed to surprise as well.

Tajemnica morderstwa na Manhattanie (1993)

angielski Unlike many of my fellow users, this film won't become a favorite of mine, or my favorite Woody Allen film, but that doesn't mean it isn't great. The suspense and humor are in perfect proportion, and when the foursome of Allen, Keaton, Alda, and Huston start solving a murder, it's a spectacle I would perhaps kill for. "Exercising changed my life." – "I prefer to atrophy."

Unicorn Store (2017)

angielski I liked the idea and the execution, but at the end I still couldn't shake the feeling that there was something missing from Unicorn Store, while on the other hand it had something it could have done without. And that what was left was "only" a slightly above average and unfortunately unnecessarily formulaic film.

Stranger Things - Season 2 (2017) (seria)

angielski Longer, more epic, more action, more horror... I mean, a typical second film that still knows the level and does not cast shame on the first film. I would actually say that this series is even better than the first, thanks mainly to the characters of Eleven and Hopper, who are really great and amazingly-acted characters that simply capture your heart. Above all, the ultra-sympathetic David Harbour (he reminded me a little of Jack Nicholson) deserves all the praise and is now one of my main hopes that the new Hellboy will be at least a little worthwhile.

Chata na prodej (2018)

angielski This is more than a good Czech film in quite a while... And on top of that, it's a comedy! Though cynical in the spirit of the trilogy about the Homolka family, it’s still a comedy. It balances great on that humorous-bitter edge and is full of real-feeling dialogues and beautiful scenes in different ways. All this with excellent acting (the characters are not caricatures, David Vávra and Ivana Chýlková are a great couple, poisonous Jana Synková uses her yelling to the maximum and Tereza Voříšková is cute even in a bear costume, including the fitted head) and with careful, intimate directing. The film is dedicated to “our" Honza Kastner and I believe he would like it, because he's simply not stupid.

Azyl (2017)

angielski I thought I'd already seen many of the scenes somewhere (and they were better), and the fates of the human characters didn't really interest me much as those of the animals. The Zookeeper's Wife is an ambitious film, but the result is (in almost a Czech TV way) unsuccessful - you look forward to it, you watch it despite not being very happy with it, and at the end you tell yourself it wasn't bad, but it could have been better. Even Jessica Chastain didn't entice me too much this time.
