Jest rok 1985 - ale nie na długo. Wszystko dlatego, że Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) niebawem zostanie wystrzelony w przeszłość, do roku 1955, za sprawą napędzanego plutonem wehikułu czasu DeLorean, którego twórcą jest nieco ekscentryczny geniusz - Doktor Emmet Brown (Christopher Lloyd). W przeszłości sprawy komplikują się, ponieważ aby wrócić do przyszłości Marty musi dopilnować, żeby jego obecnie nastoletni rodzice na pewno się poznali i zakochali w sobie.
