Tear-jerker of the year. The dubious nicecore category got its notional offshoot: the cutementary. This mix of fictional documentary, an endearing narrative about overcoming fear and a treatise on the absurdities and insignificance of online fame stands entirely on the shoulders of the original title character. Marcel, who’s a little shell with shoes, is given life and a soul by the brilliant stop-motion animation, executed with an almost obsessive focus on the bizarre details.
