Triest. Stare mieszkanie w starym budynku. To tutaj znużony Pietro spędza schyłek swojego życia, aż do momentu, gdy jego samotna codzienna rutyna zostanie zaburzona przez nakaz eksmisji. Starszy człowiek nie chce jednak opuścić domu i wymyśla sposób na to, by dalej mieszkać w nim w tajemnicy: buduje ścianę na końcu długiego korytarza, która przebiega przez mieszkanie – pionową kryjówkę, w której może znikać. Montuje kratkę wentylacyjną, otwór symulujący świetlik i kilka wizjerów, które pozwolą mu śledzić ruchy wroga (właściciela i potencjalnych nowych najemców).
