For regular viewers of pre-revolutionary France, it's just another piece of the beloved puzzle. Du Barry (1743-1793) became a very popular figure inspiring popular culture even during her lifetime. After novels (Alexandre Dumas, Zweig...), there were, of course, operettas and films. Maïwenn's approach is not bad; once again, it's opulent, a bit spicy, thrilling, and, above all, a clever spectacle. But Johnny Depp and Pierre Richard? A big disappointment. Unfortunately, without them, it wouldn't be possible to build such prominent promotion for the film because who would go see classic period films without famous names today, right? Purists would like to see the life of Du Barry even after leaving Versailles, so hopefully we get that sometime in the future.
