Pewnego grudniowego dnia 1990 r., w Nowym Jorku, Jonathan Trager spotyka Sarę Thomas. Oboje robią przedświąteczne zakupy. Drogi tych dwojga obcych sobie ludzi nagle się krzyżują, jakby prowadziło je coś więcej niż tylko zwykły przypadek. Jonathan i Sara spędzają ze sobą cały wieczór - spacerują, jeżdżą na łyżwach w Parku Centralnym. Oboje mają wrażenie, że jest coś, co ich łączy i że jest to bardzo ważne. Jonathan jest oczarowany Sarą i proponuje jej po prostu, żeby wymienili się numerami telefonów. Sara podsuwa jednak pomysł, który kontrolę nad przyszłością pozwoliłby przejąć przeznaczeniu. Mówi -"Jeśli mamy być razem, na pewno się jeszcze odnajdziemy". Dlatego numer telefonu Jonathana i jego nazwisko Sara zapisuje na banknocie pięciodolarowym, który natychmiast wydaje, kupując drobiazg w kiosku. Swój numer telefonu i swoje nazwisko Sara zapisuje w książce, która zaczyna krążyć między ludźmi. Jonathan szukając powieści odwiedzi później, tuż przed swoim ślubem, każdą księgarnię na Manhattanie. A beautiful and unpretentious film with a slight touch of romance. I appreciate the magical atmosphere and the lightness of the story. No need to wonder if it's even possible for something like this to happen. It's fantasy and anything is possible. Anyway, it caressed me and made me smile a little, even when I wasn’t in a good mood. And that's the strength of movies. 4.5 stars.

Kate Beckinsale is so beautiful that she fulfils my idea of fatal love at first sight to the tee, and the handsome John Cusack does exactly what I would do under the circumstances. But at the same time, the story is so illogical and maddeningly naive that I can't fully succumb to merely charming aesthetic sensations and give it a higher rating, although I would really like to...
