In this French police thriller, Le Guen (Jean Gabin) is an old-style police inspector, near retirement. When Gassot (Fabio Testi) escapes from the mental institute for the criminally insane, Le Guen is the best man to track him down. After all, he put him away years before. Gassot leaves behind a string of corpses and takes up with a prostitute while Le Guen chases him. Gerard Depardieu makes one of his first screen appearances here, in a small part. Killer is an average French detective film that looks like a made-for-TV production. We won’t learn anything personal about the elderly detective (Jean Gabin) and his colleagues, as the driving force of the film is the macho villain and his pretty woman. The pace is fast enough and the body count rises accordingly, but you’re left with nothing when it’s over. The film is a non-ambitious affair to kill some time with on a Sunday afternoon. The not-yet-famous Gérard Depardieu has a small role and the irritating musical motif won’t leave you alone. Given my knowledge of French genre classics like The Godson, I just can’t be more lenient towards this film.
