Akcja dzieje się w Petersburgu w 1820 roku. Przystojny i rozrzutny Oniegin dziedziczy posiadłość na wsi. Przenosi się na wieś , choć nie czuje się tam zbyt dobrze. Poznaje sąsiada Włodzimierza Lenskiego, z którym zaprzyjaźnia się. Lenski zapoznaje go ze swoją narzeczoną Olgą i jej siostrą Tatianą. Piękna Tatiana obdarowuje Oniegina uczuciem. On niestety nie odwzajemnia się. Podrywając Olgę, popada w konflikt z Lenskim., który kończy się pojedynkiem. Po tragicznym finale, Oniegin wyjeżdża z Rosji. Po sześciu latach zrozumie swój błąd. Certainly a properly pompous spectacle that faithfully represents the end of the 18th century with all its grandiosity, stiffness, and minimalism, when emotions were expressed briefly, nobly, and with appropriate form, while not being overly discussed. In this case, it is worth getting carried away by the impressive performances, the phenomenal camera work, and the brutally uncompromising editing in the style of "three years later, but you can figure it out yourself." So, perhaps a film that is a bit too narratively based on a more grandiose source, but as a chamber piece, it is very effective. I felt those emotions and perspectives, the inevitability was palpable, and the sense of formal aesthetics cannot be denied.
